The stand-alone "Star Wars" movie "Rogue One" doesn't hit theaters until December 16, but the good folks at Disney know that "The Force Awakens" has made us even more hungry for ALL things "Star Wars" these days. Luckily, the studio unexpectedly debuted the first teaser trailer for "Rogue One" this morning on "Good Morning America." Check it out below.
The movie's plot centers around Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), a young rebel spy in the early days of the Rebellion who is plotting against the Empire by trying to get the plans to the Death Star. The actions in the movie take place before those of "A New Hope," and you might notice that the trailer immediately has a feel that's reminiscent of a more modern Hollywood action film. That departure is a deliberate move to take the stand-alone movie in a new direction.
"It will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the 'Star Wars' universe,” Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has said. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential 'Star Wars' feel that fans have come to know."
The action in the trailer definitely looks amazing and the cast certainly looks promising. In addition to Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed and Forest Whitaker are all in the movie, as is the iconic martial arts artist Donnie Yen (seeing him at work in a "Star Wars" movie is going to be pretty damn awesome).
"Rogue One" is being directed by Gareth Edwards and currently slated for a Dec. 16 release.
