Despite mixed reviews, the release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" this weekend still signifies an important milestone in the DC comics universe, as we're getting our first look at Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman before her solo movie next year. Of course, fans of Wonder Woman know that she wasn't just born a superhero — she was raised and trained by a group of women on Themyscira, a secret island where Amazon women of Greek myth live and thrive. Now, we also have our official first look at how three of these women will be brought to life in the film adaptation.
Debuting the look in Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros.’ photo of Wonder Woman posing with Queen Hippolyta, General Antiope and her lieutenant Menalippe is seriously badass. Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) is Diana's mother, while General Antiope (Robin Wright) and her lieutenant Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli) are her aunts. They're all the primary women responsible for raising Diana (who of course becomes Wonder Woman). As director Patty Jenkins explains to EW, Hippolyta and Antiope often clash over what's best for Diana. “She is the only child they raised together,” Jenkins says. "And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”
While all three immortal woman look awesome, most fans were immediately focused on "House of Cards" actress Robin Wright, who looks almost unrecognizably fierce as an Amazonian military woman. Wearing armor and having a bow and arrow is a far cry from the crisp formal outfits we're accustomed to seeing Wright in as Claire on "House of Cards" — but we're totally digging the new look. As one fan commented: "If you look up the definition of FIERCE it's just written: 'Robin Wright'." Word.
"Wonder Woman" is due out on June 23, 2017, while "Batman v Superman" is released today.
