Within the shadows of Gotham City lurks a living symbol for vengeance on a life-long, self-sacrificial crusade to bring the world to justice. Now, one day a year, this vigilante sees how his work has paid off through his followers' unprecedented loyalty.

Since his first appearance in Detective Comics Issue #27 on March 30, 1939, Batman (the alter ego of orphaned billionaire Bruce Wayne) has evolved from his days as ink on a page to one of the most internationally beloved, recognizable, and "memeable" icons in fiction.

Saturday, September 15, marked this year's annual celebration of the costumed avenger (and, of course, his subordinates such as Robin), known as Batman Day. To promote the holiday, which is still somewhat in its infancy, DC distributed two special issues featuring the Dark Knight (an excerpt from Dustin Nguyen's Li'l Gotham and an early copy of the first chapter of Sean Murphy's Batman: White Knight) at comic book retailers free of charge.

Additionally, Batfans all over the world found their own creative methods to celebrate Batman Day and took to social media to spread their wings...

To some fans, imitation is the best form of flattery

... regardless of your age

... or your species.

Some cats don't even need a costume.

Some fans show their BatLove through their artistic talents.

Some show their love more... permanently.

Others show their appreciation on the go.

Even those who have donned the cowl paid their tributes to the Batman.

... and one Batman was paid tribute to.

What keeps BatFans so loyal? There is still so much to learn about him.

He may incorruptible, but the Batman is still memeable.

Even within a fandom unified by a quest for peace, a war still brews over one enduringly divisive question: who is the best Batman?

But most can agree on who fit the cowl the least impressively...

But, according to Funko, the Dark Knight is not limited to one definitive incarnation.

Overall, it does not matter which Batman you celebrate

... or how you celebrate him

... or even on which day

... because a true BatFan knows that the love you have for your heroes is everlasting.
