The Simpsons
The Simpsons
It is the longest-running animated series in all of television history. Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, Maggie and the rest of the Springfield gang had their first appearance on the "Tracy Ulman Show," but their exploits quickly expanded far beyond any other television family. Every thirty minute show is a ride into the outer limits of family comedy via animation.
Lois and Clark
Lois and Clark
This series brought modern poshness and drama to an otherwise tired comic book theme. Terri Hatcher and Dean Cain made Clark Kent and Lois Lane one of the hottest dramatic couples on TV. Metropolis was given a total glamorous makeover with this series.
The Cosby Show
The Cosby Show
The comedy of Bill Cosby and a standout cast made this show one of the most watched programs in the 1980s. Watch as the Huxtible family finds merriment and purpose in an average New York neighborhood. This series premiered some of the most memorable an iconic scenes in television.
Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live
Now in its fourth decade, SNL still delights audiences most weekends. Past sketches have initiated iconic social catch-phrases and blossomed the careers of successful actors and actresses. While Netflix does currently stream a few recent seasons, there are decades of comedy out there that we are missing out on!
Davis Rules
Davis Rules
The last television project by the comedic legend Jonathan Winters is a riot. Each episode is a simple family situation figured-out with the physical comedy of this television master-joker.
ALF
ALF
This alien loves to eat cats and has the comedic sense of Red Skelton...enough said! Let's bring back ALF!
Who's the Boss
Who's the Boss
As the 80s saw the elevation of families from average to status, this comedy dealt with the collision of classes in a heartwarming way. It also launched the careers of star Alyssa Milano, and featured 80s hunk Tony Danza as her housekeeper father.
Beverly Hills 90210
Beverly Hills 90210
Though wealth and society can provide a sense of comfort, every person has their desires. This series helped the higher class connect emotionally with people from all walks of life while watching teenagers grow up into respectful adults; well SOME of them grew up.
Roseanne
Roseanne
This is one of the first TV comedies based on the routines of a female comedian. From the Midwest US, a new standard of family drama and comedy was established that showcased the lower middle class in a new light.
Ellen
Ellen
Before her hit daytime talk show, Ellen was the star of her own sitcom in the mid 90s. The show gained notoriety when Ellen used it to come out as gay to the world in a very poignant episode featuring Oprah as her therapist.
Picket Fences
Picket Fences
This CBS drama centered on the sheriff of a small Wisconsin town and his family. It helped give Holly Marie Combs (Charmed), her start and featured many other well known stars. This is a show that I would LOVE to watch through again!
Diagnosis Murder
Diagnosis Murder
Dick Van Dyke starred alongside his actual son as a doctor who used his medical knowledge to help his detective son solve crime. Great show!
Golden Girls
Golden Girls
Somehow, a show about four retired women sharing a house in Florida was good: like really good. Granted, Betty White can't seem to fail at anything, so her part as ditzy Rose sure didn't hurt the show's popularity at all!
Family Matters
Family Matters
This long-running spinoff of "Perfect Strangers" was a must-watch for anyone who lived during the early 90s. Steve Urkel became an icon, and we think Netflix should work on adding this gem to their repertoire.
Boy Meets World
Boy Meets World
While 20 and 30 somethings everywhere rejoiced when "Girl Meets World" first aired, they are still waiting to rewatch the original series on Netflix. Disney Channel reruns are great, but even Disney won't air a few of the more serious-themed episodes, episodes that really let its young actors shine.
Salute Your Shorts
Salute Your Shorts
The show lasted a grand total of twenty-six episodes over two seasons, but it left a HUGE mark on its young audience. The show made every 90s kid want to go to summer camp, even if it did mean putting up with Ug.
Animaniacs
Animaniacs
This animated classic was the WB's after-school anchor show for kids. It was both educational and fun. To be honest, I have a feeling that kids learned more from this show than they did at school some days. That and the show-within-a-show "Pinky and the Brain" went on to become an icon in itself. Let's go Netflix; bring back our childhoods!
