"How unstable do you have to be to shoot a little dog?" is what Faulkner County, Arkansas, resident Doug Canady asked in an interview with FOX 16, after that very thing happened to his pet chihuahua, Reese's.
Canady caught the whole incident, which occurred on his own property, on his phone. WARNING: the content of the video below may disturb you.
As Canady told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the incident took place after a woman stood in the road in front of his home, pointing a gun at his property. When Canady told the woman to put the gun away, she did, but then called the authorities, claiming that Reese's the dog was being "aggressive." As seen in the video, Sheriff's deputy Keenan Wallace and his partner approached Canady's house, asking the owner to step out to the road.
When he declined, Wallace said, "OK, I’m going to come to you. If the dog gets aggressive, I’m going to shoot."
Within seconds, he proved that he meant it. The small, 10 lb chihuahua innocently approached the cop, only for him to open fire on the dog right in the mouth.
"Are you [expletive] kidding me?" Canady responded. “I just recorded you shooting that dog, in front of me, putting me in danger."
"No, I didn’t," Wallace replied. "The shot hit the dog, what I aimed at."
You might be happy, however, to learn that this story does have a happy ending.
Reese's survived the shooting, but was hospital-ridden with a shattered jaw. But the cherry on top is the news that the officer who shot her, whom ironically was a K-9 handler, was fired shortly after the incident.
"Our Department is [saddened] about this incident and apologize for any distress and disappointment this incident has caused anyone who was affected by this disheartening event," Sheriff Tim Ryals wrote in a statement. "We will keep Reese's in our thoughts through the recovery process."
What do you think? Was justice served that day when Wallace was fired for almost murdering an innocent dog in cold blood, or is terminating his employment not enough and he deserves to go to jail? Let us know in the comments below!
